So our dear friend Gary Bigeni got snapped in some bams & ted threads last month... a wonderful floral number all the way from the sprawling second-hand stalls in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

You have to know that bams & ted numbers travel far and wide to eventually end up on your back. Or your front. Or your bottom.

Whilst we were setting up at the Stables we were also working hard on another small project - styling The Meeting Room at Gaffa. It was a return to our old shop, where Miranda and Francie and Jessica all had their outings. Now the space is a meeting room which can be hired out for - oh, meetings! - and different stylists and designers take their turns prettying up the room.

We were going for something a tad on the masculine side, reminiscent of a 1950s office complete with a moody dark wood table centrepiece, lamp lighting, a somewhat Central-American tropical colour scheme and of course the ubiquitous glass amber ashtray. We have stocked the shelves chock full of our favourite fiction and glossy mags so you can sneak away from the office to flick some pages, like you know, pre-Steve Jobs times.

We will be taking some pics over the weekend so stay tuned! Or just pop-in. Gaffa is located at 281 Clarence St in the city with the closest cross street being Druitt.

Once Paddo comes to its natural end in the pop-up world, bams & ted will be moving into the Stables Theatre in Darlinghurst to take on Jane Bodie's play, This Year's Ashes. It will be a whole new adventure for bams & ted... night time opening hours, theatre crowd, Darlo town, cricket and the big challenge? Curating a collection around the oh-so-not vintage period of Next Year's Ashes. That's not to say we are not up for it, we will try anything once!

I lived in Darlinghurst from 2001-2004. I was all of 21. We lived in a 6 bedroom, rambling 3 storey terrace on Surrey St. I wrote this a few years back:

The last time I knew this sort of community feeling was all those years ago when we all shacked up in Darlo - commonly referred to as The Glory Years or The Good Old Days. The days when we all smoked so we had a reason to go to the convenience store everyday. We also had 7 in the house so a daily run to the store for bread and milk was needed. None of us seemed to work either so to keep our brain cells a ticking we would also include the Sydney Morning Herald in our daily pilgrimage. So we knew Simon at the Victoria Superette very well. So well in fact we would often have beers with him at The Green Park. Where we also knew all the staff. A result which also stemmed from a daily pilgrimage of sorts.

Darlo, huh? It kinda took my heart.

The junkies who used to scale our back fence, who slid in through the bathroom slot of a window, who to turned backs nicked in the door and pocketed wallets to escapee yodels of you scoundrel!

We dined at The New York Restaurant. We spent late nights at Barons. We played pool at The Green Park or perched ourselves high at that grand, old circular bar when you could still ash beside your $3 beer. And early light 389 bus trips to Bondi to cleanse the grit and grim away with salt.

Nostalgia, that meddling dame. A time now dead and now gone. We grieve for you. We don't necessarily want you back, but we thank God you were here.

All my greatest friends are from that period of my life. Blame Darlinghurst.

Last Friday night World Bar launched a new downstairs space The Apothecary. The dark, dank room where the pokies used to be has made way for a still dark but cosy nook with a distinctly Deadwood feel about it.

bams & ted every now and then lend a little helping hand to the Sydney Story Factory - a drop-in centre for kids to get help with their english homework and creative writing. And since we LOVE books and both work in a bookshop - it's a pretty good fit!

SSF are currently all about the collaboration. They long for a time when artists created book covers and we were all intersecting and bouncing off each other. And they need a little funding. So SSF are asking you to email them your favourite book. They will then compile a list of Sydney's favourite 50 books. Then artists like Noel McKenna and Fiona Lowry will create an art work in reference to one of the books. Then you can buy the work! You can read all about it here. But in a nutshell simply vote by emailing myfavouritebook@sydneystoryfactory.org.au

And now for a few of our favourite books, book covers and all things literati.

Murray Bail writes so beautifully and knows country like no other. Not always the most interesting characters but Bail is not about people.

Do yourself a favour and never see the film of this book. But read the book. Like a long bath, with threat of drowning but with no explanation as to why. Just a feeling.

Great nostaglic photograph of Kate - total TROUBLE! If you have never read Snake - read it. Superb.

Another time - when dustjacket art was alluring and beautifully printed.

One of the great book covers of all time. I longed for this boy for about 12 months before I succumbed and read the book. Dissappointed. But still a lovely face. And tone.

Wuthering Heights... I am currently reading this for the very first time. Rambling, rollicking, horrid characters but Heathcliff and Cathy make for damn fine bed partners.

Our good friends, Even Books - two lovely ladies who kinda do the same thing as bams & ted sans clothes (naked bams & ted) - have invited us to take part in their Late Night Library event next week. They will be presenting Tinah Feyman's Bedpants - a grammatical love-in between Sarah Silverman and Tina Fey. Unfortunately, it is on the same night as our Edward Scissorhands opening in Paddington so no, you can't go. You have to come to Paddo. Well, actually, what you could do true-Sydney-style is do both. bams & ted 6-9pm. Even Books 9-10pm. Or to be equitable - bams & ted 6-8pm. Even Books 8-10pm. Anyway, you timetable your own life.

Either way, bams & ted will be creating a little homage to Alec Baldwin ala Jack Donaghy in 30 Rock. It will be a little creepy, perhaps a touch on the Heathcliff side of obsession. He deserves the love, though. Poor Jack, as a child he was lured to the side of the swimming pool by his father who subsequently pushed him in the pool. And his mother blamed him for the death of JFK. But hey, Jack grew up and the kid is alright. He wrote Carly Simon's You're so Vain and had an affair with Condoleezza Rice. Nothing wrong with that.

So prepare yourself for one big bear hug from our favourite Baldwin. He's not from this decade.

I sure am. I landed at Kingsford Smith this morning to be greeted by the Sydney handshake - torrential rains and the chills, oh the chills! Granted I have spent the last two weeks bathed in 35 degree days, the dirty Danube and the Adriatic. Boo to wearing jeans and covering up my tan!

bams & ted are taking on the war with two new pop-up shops set to open at 84 William St in Paddington, Sydney from 1 July 2011.

In our first battle we stake out the dark, smokey
bars of London during the Blitz and then venture north to the ragged cliffs of the Welsh coastline where we accompany Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas and his combative ladies, namely his wife Caitlin and his ex-lover, Vera as they wait out the war. Dressed in idyllic florals, cute-as-pie cardies, long socks and boots we spend our days combing the shore for shells and pebbles and holed
up in local village pubs being generally obnoxious creatives. Please join us for a frivolous opening night of 1940s war bombshells, set in the tube stations of underground London where the songstresses entertained the troops and whiled the fright away to the sonorous tones of Dylan Thomas.

In August bams & ted will move forward forty years to the war on surburbia and mediocrity amongst the neo-gothic set of Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. With block pastels and blackest blacks we will roam the generic landscaped lawns of American suburbia asking ourselves where eccentricity and difference is hiding. Please join us for the opening night on Friday 5 August when crazy cuts will be the order of the day!

pop-up at Locksmith Project Space on Botany Rd. in Alexandria!

After visiting the leading ladies of ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ (Miranda), ‘To Catch a Thief’ (Francie) and ‘Murder She Wrote’ (Jessica) earlier in 2010, bams & ted will now focus upon the super-excessive Sebastian from the Evelyn Waugh classic ‘Brideshead Revisited.’ Not just for the boys, this range of vintage clothing, objects and furnishings will revolve around the androgynous 1920’s where religion hung like a dark cloud but frivolity was the hark of the day.

Please join us on Thursday 3 June from 6 – 9pm for the opening night of Sebastian when Locksmith Project Space will reveal itself as the den of 1920’s English excess – complete with bright, young things!

bams & ted is a vintage store cum dress-up box! With no fixed abode, bams & ted temporarily sets up shop in various locations around Sydney – from 19th century police cells to ex-Locksmith premises on the Redfern/Alexandria border. Each month bams & ted surrounds a different character of conceptual interest with the store transforming itself into an immersive, theatrical space inspired by the film or novel in question.
